Abstract
It is well known that L-arginine plays a important role in regulation of the normal function of several organs including immune system. Taurine is an abundant free amino acid in inflammatory cells that protects cells from inflammatory damages. Treatment of the mixture of L-arginine (0.5%, w/v) and taurine (0.2%, w/v) significantly enhanced nitric oxide (NO) and tumor necrosis factor-a (TNF-¥á) production in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated murine macrophages in a concentration-dependent manner. In addition, oral administration of the mixture (500 ml/ mouse/day) resulted in a prominent suppressed the level of blood glucose in ob/ob mice. These results suggest that the mixture of L-arginine (0.5%, w/v) and taurine (0.2%, w/v) possesses immunomodulating activity and anti-diabetic effect.
